Early Wednesday morning, as the Bridge Fire continued to prompt evacuation warnings in San Bernardino County, two Ontario residents were caught in a strange situation that involved alleged drugs and the kidnapping of local wildlife. Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, while patrolling the Mt. Baldy and San Antonio Heights areas, approached a "suspicious vehicle" parked illegally within the designated evacuation zone around 2:30 a.m., according to KTLA.
The discovery inside the vehicle was as unexpected as the location in which it was found. Vincent Olivas, 32, and Melissa Segura, 23, both from Ontario, were found with suspected fentanyl, drug paraphernalia, and items suggesting intent to steal. Compounding the oddity of the arrest, deputies also found several wild opossums in the vehicle, which the suspects had apparently captured from the area. The opossums were fortunately unharmed and subsequently released back into the wild, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated in a Nixle alert.
Olivas and Seguras were arrested on complaints of drug possession and booked into jail. Authorities have kept the incident under investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the Fontana Sheriff’s Station or the We-Tip Hotline. This bewildering crime, unfolding amid the backdrop of a natural disaster zone, has highlighted the unpredictable intersections of nature and unlawful human behavior.
