The Orlando's Wadeview Park neighborhood community is rallying for accountability and answers after a severe flooding incident they attribute to a major construction project. At a City Council meeting yesterday, residents like Katie Coch expressed frustrations about the situation, saying, "We feel unheard, we feel unanswered, and it’s incredibly frustrating," as reported by FOX 35 Orlando. However, city officials have claimed that the flooding resulted from intense rainfall and overwhelming drainage systems, not construction.
Despite city officials citing the unexpected volume of rain as the cause, locals remain unswayed and seek interventions. Isabella Brown, a landscape designer within the community, illustrated drainage issues to the council, emphasizing that significant storms in the past had not resulted in flooding—in her view, it is the construction that has altered the neighborhood's landscape and Scott Paxton, a 15-year resident remarked on the unprecedented water levels, stating that "It was crazy to see that much water concentrated in my backyard," as conveyed in an interview, reported by WESH.
The lack of satisfactory responses from city representatives to homeowners left reeling from the damage has compounded the community's grievances. During a heated meeting last week, officials like District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan and Orlando Public Works Director Corey Knight departed abruptly after being confronted by homeowners, as noted by FOX 35 Orlando. Residents are calling for more than just apologies. They are demanding concrete solutions and a recognition of their concerns, which, to date, still seem unresolved.
Residents, including Abbot, feel that their elected officials have been disrespectful and unsympathetic, as discussed in a recent council meeting. In response, Mayor Buddy Dyer has asked Public Works Director Knight to review the flood map presented by Brown and explore ways to reduce flood risk while construction continues. This is a hopeful step for those affected by flooding in the Wadeview Park area.
