An Oxnard man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for numerous counts of child sexual abuse. Omar Cruz-Hernandez, 39, will serve 152 years to life in state prison as announced by District Attorney Erik Nasarenko. On August 2, 2024, a jury found Cruz-Hernandez guilty on seven felony charges which included forcible rape, sexual intercourse with a child under ten, and continuous sexual abuse of multiple victims.
A troubling picture emerged during the trial, as victims recounted sustained abuse starting from when they were ten and seven years old respectively. According to a release from the Ventura County District Attorney's office, these crimes were perpetrated by Cruz-Hernandez, who had familial access to the victims. "The defendant committed unspeakable acts of sexual abuse against multiple vulnerable children," Deputy District Attorney Michael Kern stated, adding that the sentence demonstrates the community's intolerance for such crimes.
The case, prosecuted by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Sexual Assault Unit, underscored the severity of the crimes and the system's response to them. The jury's finding of guilt on multiple counts highlighted the pattern of abuse and the impact on the victims. Cruz-Hernandez's familial relationship with the children was a factor in his access to and prolonged abuse of the victims.
While the legal outcome can't reverse the damage done, Deputy District Attorney Michael Kern expressed hope for the victims' healing. "While nothing will ever undo the harm that the defendant inflicted, I hope this sentence provides even a small amount of closure to the victims and allows their healing process to continue," Kern said. The case of Cruz-Hernandez exposes a grim reality that often hides in plain sight, drawing attention to the need for vigilance and support for survivors of such egregious acts. The sentence aims to ensure that Omar Cruz-Hernandez will not have another opportunity to cause harm to children.
