A high school football game in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, escalated into a physical altercation when a parent attacked an assistant coach on the sidelines, according to video evidence and school officials. The incident occurred during a varsity football game at Warren Woods Tower High School last Friday night.
As reported by the Macomb Daily, the fight began after a parent, reportedly dissatisfied with his son's role in the game, walked from the visitors' bleachers onto the field, and appeared to launch a physical assault on the coach. This quickly erupted into a skirmish, drawing in players and other coaches in an attempt to separate them. The involved assistant coach was later released from the coaching staff, although the video seems to suggest he was the victim.
Lake Shore High School's Principal, Dr. Janelle Bross, in communication with parents, expressed profound disappointment in the behavior of both individuals, as FOX 2 Detroit reported her saying, "There is no tolerance for physical aggression or violence and that the actions of both men did not meet the expectations we have for members of our school community and therefore neither will be allowed on our property or at any future Lake Shore events."
Rob McFarlin, the assistant coach at the center of the event, claimed he acted to protect the students and staff. However, despite his assertion of defensive action, the parent and coach are to not be permitted entry onto Lake Shore High School grounds or events, as Principal Bross stated in a letter, as per WWJ Newsradio. The nature of the coach's termination alongside the barring of the parent, suggests a zero-tolerance policy from the school’s administration for such confrontations.
The Warren Police Department is currently investigating the incident to fully understand the sequence of events and to determine if criminal charges may be filed. Public opinion amongst Lake Shore parents appears mixed, with some sympathizing with the defensive stance of the coach while others emphasize the seriousness of adults setting a better example. The outcome of the game itself, a 28-12 victory for Warren Woods Tower, has been overshadowed by the off-field incident and its ramifications for the Lake Shore High School community.
