Penn State's Amin Vanover, a senior defensive lineman for the Nittany Lions, has been charged with driving under the influence of marijuana, according to several media reports. The 23-year-old football player faces misdemeanor counts of DUI of a controlled substance and was also cited for operating an unregistered vehicle, as confirmed by CBS affiliate WTAJ-TV.
The traffic stop that led to Vanover's charges occurred on August 8 when police noted a black Dodge Charger with an expired tag. Further investigation and a blood draw revealed THC in his system. Court documents highlighted by Statecollege.com showed Vanover's blood test was positive for delta-9, delta-9 carboxy THC, and delta THC. Vanover allegedly told police that the drug use was by friends in the car, and he did not possess a medical marijuana card.
Despite the unfolding legal situation, Vanover's role on the Penn State football team has seen him participate in two games this season, contributing two tackles. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 2. Penn State Athletics, in a statement obtained by WGAL, stated, "We are aware of the charges against Amin Vanover. These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and will be addressed."
The university has opted to withhold further comment about potential internal disciplinary actions, citing the active nature of the legal matter. Penn State coach James Franklin, asked about the situation after practice yesterday in State College, reinforced that he does not normally discuss internal punishments, as reported by Statecollege.com. Currently, the Nittany Lions' next game scheduled for September 21 at home against Kent State.
