In a decisive move to address the affordable housing challenges of the city, the Raleigh City Council has put forth a robust $22.8 million investment, earmarking these funds for the construction of 454 affordable housing units, as stated on the city's official Housing and Neighborhoods Affordable Housing page. The approved projects place these units in proximity to essential services such as public transportation routes, grocery stores, and healthcare facilities.
The bulk of the allocation, a $15.7 million portion, is dedicated to constructing 160 affordable homes within the Moore Square area. According to the city's announcement, this strategic effort not only emphasizes accessible housing but also inclusivity, with residential spaces designated for those earning between 30% and 80% of the area's median income, and integrates supportive housing initiatives for individuals grappling with homelessness and disabilities through collaborations with the NCHFA's Targeting program and Wake County's Rental Assistance Housing Program.
Beyond these 160 units, the Council has also dedicated the remaining $7.1 million as gap financing to see the completion of 294 affordable rental units split between the Maple Ridge and Strickland Apartments developments; Maple Ridge alone will boast 146 homes, with a mix of one- to three-bedroom accommodations, and a commitment that 41 of these will be reserved for households at the lower spectrum of the financial scale, earning 20% to 50% of the AMI, demonstrating the city's tactical approach to bridging the affordability gap.
The Strickland Apartment complex rounds off the investment with 148 homes, featuring varied room configurations and similarly setting aside a fraction of these spaces for tenants situated at the 20% to 60% AMI threshold, ensuring a diversification of availability that meets a range of income levels. The city's efforts here reflect a continuing trajectory toward growth and an ongoing dedication to ensuring its residents, irrespective of economic standing, can find solace within the city's boundaries.
