A tragic incident unfolded in Raleigh on Friday night when a 65-year-old man's car was struck by a pickup truck in a collision that authorities say may have been caused by a medical emergency. According to CBS 17, the accident occurred before 9 p.m. at the intersection of New Bern Avenue and Freedom Drive.
The victim, identified as Robert Traczewski, was driving a 2005 Acura TL, stopped at a red light on Freedom Drive when a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500, heading eastbound on New Bern Avenue went off the road, and became airborne. The truck subsequently collided with the driver's side of Traczewski's car. ABC 11 reported that the pickup's driver may have experienced a medical crisis, which resulted in loss of control over the vehicle, although impairment does not seem to have played a role in the crash.
Emergency responders transported Traczewski to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Dodge Ram was also taken to the hospital but with non-life-threatening injuries. As it stands, no charges have been filed in relation to this incident. The Raleigh Police Department continues to investigate the crash, as noted by WRAL. Although no immediate details were provided about the nature of the medical emergency suffered by the pickup truck driver, local authorities stress the importance of road safety and vigilance.
