Raleigh pet owners, it's time to mark your calendars for some crucial pet care services that won't break the bank. In an effort to ensure the health and safety of the city's beloved animal companions, the Raleigh Police Department's Animal Control Unit is hosting discounted rabies vaccination and free microchipping clinics in a local City park. According to an announcement on the City of Raleigh's official website, two clinics were previously held in May and two more sessions are scheduled for September.

For just $5, payable in cash, pet owners can get their dog or cat a one-year rabies vaccination, which is not just recommended but required by law in North Carolina for pets older than four months as per North Carolina General Statute 130A-185. The same clinics will also be offering a chance to have your pets microchipped and receive distemper vaccinations free of cost.

The threat of rabies is real and potentially deadly, but it is a preventable condition with proper vaccinations. This virus can easily transmit to humans via the saliva of an infected animal, prompting public health efforts like this to protect the community at large. The use of microchipping is another layer of protection, ensuring that lost pets have a greater likelihood of being reunited with their owners. The microchip, roughly the size of a grain of rice, is implanted under a pet’s skin and can be scanned by veterinarians and animal shelters to facilitate a lost pet's return.
