Raleigh residents and visitors should prepare for a major detour this weekend as the North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to demolish a bridge over Hillsborough Street near Interstate 440. This demolition is part of efforts to improve and expand the area, marking a shift from older infrastructure to new developments.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has confirmed that parts of Hillsborough Street will be closed due to the demolition, targeting the old bridge located eastbound on I-440, which has been a fixture of Raleigh's landscape since 1958. According to CBS17, the closure will start at 9 p.m. on Friday and last until 5 a.m. on Monday. The demolition is part of a larger project begun in 2019 to widen the road from four to six lanes and improve interchanges for better transportation flow and safety.
Motorists traveling west on Hillsborough Street will be redirected to a detour via I-440 East and Wade Avenue, then back to I-440 West to reconnect with Hillsborough Street. Those heading east will detour to I-440 West, then Western Boulevard, and finally I-440 East to get back to Hillsborough Street, as reported by The News & Observer. These detour routes are designed to avoid the demolition site while keeping traffic flowing smoothly as the city's infrastructure is updated.
The News & Observer highlights the historical importance of the bridge, noting that it was the first part of what is now I-440 to open, witnessing decades of Raleigh's growth. According to WRAL, the demolition depends on weather conditions, but current forecasts look favorable. Motorists are advised to stay alert and follow traffic signs to navigate the temporary detours during this period of change.
While the weekend closures will cause some disruption for drivers, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and other officials are staying attentive and communicative to minimize inconvenience for residents and visitors. They advise the public to expect delays and stay alert during construction.
