A two-story apartment building in Canoga Park was engulfed in flames yesterday afternoon, drawing a rapid response from Los Angeles firefighters. According to an alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the fire occurred at 20946 W Bryant St. The incident, logged as INC#0983, started at around 3:04 p.m., when firefighters arrived to find two units well involved in the fire.
Firefighters were in an offensive mode as additional resources were dispatched to the scene. The fire engulfed a garden-style apartment building that houses multiple residences. Despite the potential for widespread damage, the LAFD was able to contain the blaze effectively, as reported by the department's official notification channel.
The intensity of the situation can often be measured by the resources deployed. The LAFD had dispatched several fire engines and trucks, along with battalion command units, rescue ambulances, and specialized urban search and rescue units to tackle the blaze. Margaret Stewart of the LAFD informed that the Council District 3 incident drew a substantial firefighter presence, consisting of multiple engine and truck companies operating under the guidance of several battalion commanders.
After intense firefighting efforts, the LAFD achieved a knockdown of the fire in roughly 18 minutes. It was determined that the fire primarily affected one unit and spread to a second, but, firefighters prevented any further extension. This swift containment likely spared neighboring units from significant damage and averted a potential disaster. The remarkable knockdown announcement was made by LAFD at 3:22 p.m., as indicated by an updated alert that praised the work of the 44 firefighters who were on the scene, according to Stewart.
The cause of the fire has not been disclosed, updates are expected as an investigation into the incident progresses.
