Sean E. Karjala, a 53-year-old from Red Bluff, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison and lifetime supervised release after being convicted for creating child sexual abuse material, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert confirmed. According to a press release on the U.S. Attorney's Office website, Karjala will serve this sentence concurrently with a state sentence for attempted murder.
In a disturbing revelation, court documents detail how Karjala initiated an illegal sexual relationship in 2013 with a minor female who responded to an online ad. Karjala manipulated the girl into enduring abuse and participating in sexual acts with another woman, which he documented with photos on his cellphone. He also brazenly attempted to engage another minor in sexual activity, unknowingly communicating with an undercover officer.
The subsequent investigation led to a search of Karjala's residence and vehicle where evidence, including sexual bondage materials, clothing for younger females, and a picture of Karjala with the victim, was discovered. Moreover, within Karjala’s vehicle, an incriminating bag containing a bondage manual, condoms, and a slip from a local high school counseling office with the victim's name, was unearthed.
Prosecutors Heiko P. Coppola and Roger Yang successfully presented evidence against Karjala. This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative focused on tackling child sexual abuse and exploitation. The program helps federal, state, and local agencies bring offenders to justice while emphasizing victim recovery and prevention.
