After almost three decades leading Stonebriar Community Church, Chuck Swindoll has announced his retirement. In a recent service, the Texas pastor, who planted the Frisco megachurch in 1998, shared with his congregation that his final sermon will be delivered on October 20. "God has made it clear to me that these five Sundays will be my final five Sundays as your pastor — your leader, your pulpit expositor," Swindoll was quoted in the Houston Chronicle.
Swindoll's legacy extends beyond his tenure at Stonebriar. His influence is perhaps to widely sense through "Insight for Living," the Bible-teaching ministry and radio program he co-founded with his wife, Cynthia. According to the Dallas News, the radio program is broadcast on more than 2,000 stations worldwide. Swindoll, who is 89, plans to dedicate his post-retirement efforts to this ministry. His transition away from the pulpit signals a new chapter for himself and the megachurch he helped found.
Over the years, Swindoll became a notable figure in Christian circles, penning dozens of books on the faith and broadcasting his teachings far across. He also held significant roles beyond his church, serving as president of Dallas Theological Seminary from 1994 to 2001 and noteworthy, placing second only to Billy Graham in a 2009 survey asking Protestant pastors to name the living Christian preachers who most influenced them.
Stonebriar Community Church, which sees more than 3,000 attendees at Sunday services and roughly 16,000 online viewers, has already seen a transition of responsibilities as Jonathan Murphy took over day-to-day operations since May of this year. "Chuck is truly a living legend," Murphy said, as per a statement obtained by the Dallas News. The respect and admiration for Swindoll's leadership spilled over in Murphy's words, acknowledging the impact Swindoll has had not only on the community of believers but also encompassing his personal journey.
"I'm so grateful to have a small part in this big work that God is doing," Swindoll told his congregants, stressing that while he may be stepping down from his role at the church, his ministry work is far from over. Swindoll and his wife will continue to work from the headquarters of Insight for Living Ministries, steadfast in their mission to teach and spread their interpretation of the Bible, according to Houston Chronicle.
