On September 13, Baltimore County Police were called to the scene of a shooting at about 11:30 a.m. off Dunkirk Road, where 50-year-old Mark McKenzie suffered a gunshot wound during an attempted robbery, as reported by FOX Baltimore. As the investigation continues, Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough pledged the department's commitment to community safety and support.
Gathering together in the same neighborhood, dozens showed support by participating in a community walk approximately a week and a half after the incident. Peter Dimitriades, a resident, emphasized the need for the community to show unity during this "really awful" circumstance, a sentiment captured during an interview per WMAR-2 News. Residents refuse to let the violence define the character of their neighborhood, expressing hope for McKay's quick recovery and commending his family's strength.
The community has also rallied around the victim's family through financial support. A GoFundMe campaign for the McKenzie family has garnered over $120,000, revealing the depth of solidarity within Rodgers Forge. During the walk, Chief McCullough addressed the crowd, stating, "You've spoken tonight by just the number of people who are here. You're saying you care," as WMAR-2 News detailed.
On tackling the issue of juvenile crime, Baltimore County Councilmember Mike Ertel responded to the lack of identified suspects in the shooting, pointing toward camera footage suggesting the involvement of juveniles. According to FOX Baltimore, Ertel criticized state laws for failing to address and rehabilitate juvenile offenders adequately.
As juvenile crime increases, Baltimore County Police prioritize it. McCullough noted that while auto thefts are common, juvenile crime also affects other areas. Some state laws on juvenile justice will change later this year, and McCullough hopes for more improvements in future sessions. Meanwhile, Metro Crime Stoppers offers a $2,000 reward for information that helps the investigation, and authorities are dedicated to resolving the case.
