Residents, some of whom are elderly, are being forced to consider alternatives such as propane and solar energy to cope with the impending loss of services. Charlie Raine, a resident of the affected area in Rolling Hills, expressed his obligation to assist his neighbors, stating, "There's a lot of people that are dealing with this, and it's overwhelming for them."
The landslides have already led to the destruction of 17 homes atop a canyon in July 2023, with residents along Peartree Lane given less than 30 minutes to pack before they were forced to leave their homes, a sobering scenario cited by CBS News Los Angeles. The fear of further land movement and its knock-on effects, such as wildfires from downed utility poles and wires, prompted the utilities' decisions. Charlie Raine expressed his skepticism about the severity of the land movement, addressing the response by Southern California Edison as "disastrous," in a statement obtained by Fox LA News. "It's a life-changing experience," said Raine, highlighting the short notice given to residents and his disbelief over the necessity of such drastic measures given the current state of the fissures around Quail Ridge.
In light of the ongoing situation, the city of Rolling Hills has pledged to hold utility companies accountable, urging them to implement solutions that will restore services quickly and safely. Mayor Leah Mirsch emphasized the city's priority on the safety and well-being of its residents.
