With an aim to firmly establish gun safety in communities, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio has launched a new initiative meant to educate the public on the critical importance of proper firearm storage. In collaboration with the Richmond Heights Police Department, the office is set to host an event titled "Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives", as was reported by Justice.gov. Scheduled for September 19, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Richmond Heights Community Center, the program seeks to broadly share knowledge and practical steps on how to prevent gun-related accidents and fatalities, particularly among children and teens.
The initiative comes on the heels of several tragic incidents involving young children who inadvertently accessed unsecured firearms, with fatal consequences. "Every one of these tragedies could have been prevented," said U.S. Attorney Rebecca Lutzko, in a sentiment obtained by Justice.gov. A slew of speakers, including Lutzko, will be featured at the event. They are aiming to offer educational insights about the dangers of unsafe firearm storage and to provide tools that can reduce the incidence of firearms-related accidents and self-harm.
Free gun locks are to be distributed at the event by local law enforcement, with no personal information required for receipt. Attendees can also anticipate demonstrations of a variety of safe storage devices and one-on-one discussions on the best practices for firearm storage. This outreach and educational effort aligns with National Suicide Prevention Month, with statistics shared at the event highlighting a 20 percent rise in firearm-related suicides across the U.S. from 2012 to 2022.
Additional resources, including flyers, safety pledge certificates, and safety manuals, are available on the U.S. Attorney's Office website for those interested in promoting the message of secure gun storage. "Our goal is to amplify the message of responsible firearm ownership through this community-centered, public-safety strategy," Lutzko told Justice.gov. With accessible information and a community-based approach, the initiative seeks to greatly reduce instances of unintentional firearm injuries and deaths.
For information seekers and participants looking forward to joining the Richmond Heights program, further details can be sourced from Jessica Salas Novak via phone at 216-622-3921 or by email at [email protected]. The movement toward safer gun storage is an ongoing one, and the public is encouraged to keep an eye out for additional safe storage community programs to be announced in the future.
