A substitute teacher from Salisbury is facing allegations of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student at Faith Academy Charter School. Michael Carl Chapman, 68, was arrested and charged with felony indecent liberties with a child, as reported by the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
According to WBTV, Chapman, who also tried his hand at school board politics in the past, was given a secured bond set at $75,000 and has since posted a bond. The incident that precipitated these charges allegedly took place on May 20. It wasn't until the school's administration reported it to the school resource officer that an official inquiry began.
A closer look into the case reveals that Chapman, who once ran and finished last for a seat on the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education, had his involvement at the school swiftly terminated after the allegations surfaced. "Our school staff and Board of Directors will not tolerate misconduct of staff members or students," a Faith Academy spokesperson expressed in a statement obtained by WCNC.
The Rowan County Sheriff's Office initiated their investigation following the school's notification of a suspected assault. Chapman's arrest was conducted on Aug. 30, and details concerning the nature of the alleged indecent liberties have not been extensively publicized, with QC News reporting that the accused had touched the young student. Chapman's next court date is scheduled for Oct. 28.
