A Santa Ana corrections officer faces felony charges for allegedly falsifying jail logs to cover up his lack of required safety checks on an inmate who committed suicide. Esteban Gonzalez, 39, from Chino, is accused of three counts of altering public documents while employed at the Santa Ana Detentions Facility in 2021. If convicted on all charges, Gonzalez could receive up to 6 years in state prison, as reported by the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
The charges stem from an incident on June 25, 2021, in which another officer conducted a safety check on inmate Darryle Samuel at 9:31 AM, with Gonzalez assuming duty afterward. Contradicted by video evidence, jail logs falsified by Gonzalez purported that he conducted safety checks that were never completed. The inmates, released for lunch with Samuel unaccounted for, were insidiously portrayed as all present in his altered logs, while Samuel had already taken his own life.
An internal probe by the Santa Ana Police Department shed light on this alleged deception, uncovering discrepancies in Gonzalez's log entries when compared to surveillance footage. Notably, Gonzalez is accused of implementing changes to the logs while emergency responders were attempting to save Samuel's life. "The callousness involved in desperately try to alter the jail log while paramedics were trying to revive Mr. Darryle is unconscionable," Orange District Attorney Todd Spitzer told the press in a statement.
The investigation concluded that although Samuel's suicide was a deliberate choice after learning distressing personal news, there was no substantial evidence to criminally implicate any party in his death. Yet, following an audit of the logs, charges were formulated against Gonzalez for his alleged records tampering, drawing attention to the solemn responsibilities that correctional officers are sworn to uphold. According to Deputy District Attorney Deborah Einhorn of the Special Prosecutions Unit, who currently is prosecuting the case, inmates' safety and well-being are entrusted to the officers, with Gonzalez purportedly having failed in this fundamental duty.
