In Santa Monica, the summer was a time for growth and learning for the youth community as the city's various departments rolled out an extensive line-up of enriching programs. By offering a diverse set of activities through city-run camps, classes, and special events, more than 55,500 school-aged kids had the opportunity to participate in what became a blend of education, creativity, and physical activity, as reported by Santa Monica's official blog.
The summer agenda included offerings from the Housing and Human Services Department with over 350 kids attending the Virginia Avenue Park (VAP), Police Activities League (PAL), and Childcare, Recreation, Enrichment, Sports, Together (CREST) summer camps. Providing enrichment during critical out-of-school times, these programs acted as a safe haven for kids, known for their engaging community involvement that would help them to thrive in the upcoming school year.
The PAL program catered to about 127 local youth, providing a platform for myriad summer camp activities, as per the City of Santa Monica. One high school senior at the camp was leading a charge by teaching financial literacy classes for eight weeks, intending to instill the art of budgeting and saving in younger students. Educational initiatives like Summer Brain Gain and a Teen Book Club complemented these lessons, as these camps aimed to inspire a culture of continuous learning even as schools remained closed.
CREST camp, in contrast, drew an average of 85 attendees per week, who chose between STEAM and Surf n' Turf Adventures, depending on their interests. Activities extended to cutting-edge STEAM projects and water sports for those in the Surf n' Turf group. Visits to Six Flags and the California Science Center were among the highpoints reported by parents, who were appreciative of the city's financial assistance program benefitting 93 participants, averting the economic barrier that could have otherwise limited access.
Community Aquatics programs saw 1,528 people take part in "Learn to Swim" classes across Santa Monica's aquatic centers, which was just a fraction of the 46,001 total participants who sought recreation in the water during summer's heat, as detailed by the City of Santa Monica. From the enthusiasm witnessed in fitness classes to the triumphs of the Sharks Swim Team, aquatic activities underscored the city's investment in comprehensive recreational experiences for residents of all ages.
