Seattle residents can expect to see some activity at local favorite Genesee Playfield as renovation work commences this week. Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) has teamed with Coast to Coast Turf to begin the Genesee Playfield 1 & 2 Replacement project, with mobilization starting at 4316 S. Genesee St. The first phase of the project aims to refurbish the upper playfield known as Playfield 2, with an anticipated reopening by spring 2025, according to Seattle Parks and Recreation. The lower playfield, or Playfield 1, is slated for completion in the fall of 2025.

The modernization endeavor involves the removal of the current synthetic turf, which has reached the end of its life span, and the execution of structural repairs to foundational elements like curbing sub-subsurface, and drainage systems. Improving access and lighting is also part of the plan, ensuring that these facilities can accommodate year-round use. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the contractor are committed to reducing the project's impact on the neighborhood, and they appreciate residents' patience and cooperation during this time.

In line with SPR's commitment to safety and sustainability, the new installations will feature cutting-edge synthetic turf systems. This includes the integration of sustainable cork and sand infill atop a cushioned pad system designed for better playability, durability, and reduced heat retention during warmer months. By renovating the synthetic turf playfields every 10 to 12 years, SPR maintains safety standards due to the natural aging and degradation of the turf fibers that are essential for a soft surface.
