An unusual sight befell drivers on National Trails Highway in Amboy on Monday, September 2, when a small Cessna 152 airplane crashed near Roy's Café at around 12:26 p.m. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, the pilot and passenger miraculously walked away from the wreckage without injury after their failed attempt to take flight from the highway resulted in the plane striking a street caution sign and rolling multiple times before coming to rest in a desert field adjacent to the road.
The response to the incident saw the collective efforts of the San Bernardino County Fire Department, California Highway Patrol officers, and rangers from the California State Park Police, while the crash investigation was marshaled by deputies from the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station who cooperated with federal officials, the crash unfolded into a broader conversation about the risks faced by small aircraft operators who share a landscape with terrestrial travelers and indeed the swift response of emergency personnel cracking open lines of communication with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board exemplified a concerted effort to mitigate the fallout and scrutinize the atypical circumstances leading to the crash. Deputies are requesting any information related to the incident and encourage witnesses to reach out to the Morongo Basin Station or to contact We-Tip for anonymous tips.
Unexpectedly, the Cessna had touched down earlier that day, and post landing, the pilot attempted to use the pavement of National Trails Highway for a subsequent takeoff, but the plane failed to gain the necessary lift, leading to the collision with the roadside sign and the unfortunate overturn of the craft. The Federal Aviation Administration alongside the National Transportation Safety Board has joined the investigation.
