A Statesville man is now facing charges for the alleged identity theft of an elderly family member, as reported by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation, originating from a financial institution's fraud report filed on April 1, pinpointed Joshua Mayberry, 39, as the suspect in a scheme that plundered the finances of a vulnerable relative, Iredell Free News reported. Mayberry is suspected of illicitly using the victim's credit cards and other financial accounts over a span stretching from 2018 through 2024.

According to QC News, Mayberry was apprehended on the grounds of multiple charges, including felony identity theft and obtaining property under false pretence. Locked behind the bars of a $75,000 secured bond, Mayberry now faces the legal consequences of the crimes he is accused of.

Investigative efforts by the Sheriff's Office Special Victims Unit Economic Crimes Division led by Detective C. Nielsen unveiled the family dynamic behind the exploitation. After a meticulous investigation and the execution of several search warrants for financial documents and evidence, a pilfering that amounted to more than $100,000, according to WCCB Charlotte.

A news release from Sheriff Darren Campbell indicated that Mayberry had been making unauthorized purchases using the victim's bank accounts and financial cards since April 2018. In a statement obtained by the Iredell Free News, Campbell said, "Mayberry had previously fraudulently accessed the victim’s finances since April 2018." Following the uncovering of the full scope of the deceit, the accused faced nine felony charges, including the felony exploitation of an elderly individual from a position of trust (over $100,000), and felony obtaining property by false pretense (over $100,000).
