A man has been charged with multiple offenses following a violent home invasion in Montgomery County, after being shot by the victim's son. The incident, which occurred in Abington Township, has raised concerns about safety following visits to local casinos. Khabir Shepard, identified as the suspect, was taken into custody after the altercation on Horace Avenue.
According to reports from FOX 29, Shepherd followed the female victim from a casino and forcibly entered her home in the early hours of Monday. During the ensuing struggle, police say the woman's son came to her aid. Hearing her screams, he retrieved his legally-owned weapon and shot Shepard in self-defense. The charges against Shepard include robbery and aggravated assault.
The woman, who was targeted by Shepard due to the cash she was carrying, had just arrived home when Shepard pushed his way inside and pointed a gun at her, as detailed by authorities. He discharged his firearm upon seeing the assailant armed, striking Shepard twice, incidents confirmed by 6abc.
After being shot, Shepard managed to exit the house but collapsed on the front lawn where he was later apprehended by the police. A handgun, believed to be Shepard's, was recovered at the scene. Following his arrest, Shepard was hospitalized for the gunshot wounds and was subsequently remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility with a bail set at $250,000 cash, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia.
In response to the attack, Abington Township Police Chief Patrick Molloy emphasized the calculated nature of the crime, stating, "This was not a random crime. They knew there was cash in that purse." Molloy also offered precautionary advice to the public, particularly to casino patrons, to be vigilant about their surroundings, FOX 29 reports. The investigation is ongoing as police work to establish whether Shepard acted alone or as part of a larger scheme.
