A man was shot by a SWAT team sniper after he opened fire on police officers with an AR-style rifle in Farmington Hills. The incident began with a domestic assault report and escalated into a dangerous confrontation that took place yesterday afternoon near Middlebelt and 12 Mile Roads, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
According to Audacy, during the standoff, the suspect, a 32-year-old male, attempted to break into an upstairs room where his partner's children had barricaded themselves. The situation drew a large law enforcement response that included local departments and the oakland County Sheriff's SWAT team. The perpetrator managed to quickly open fire outside the front door after the two children, a 14-year-old and a 6-year-old, were able to safely escape the house without injury.
The standoff resulted in damage to five police vehicles and multiple homes in the neighborhood. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard described the scenario as very dangerous, with bullets reaching across Middlebelt Road, according to a Facebook post from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Despite the chaotic environment, no bystanders were reported injured from the gunfire that struck neighboring houses and areas south of the location.
In an effort to de-escalate the situation, law enforcement officials made numerous attempts to communicate with the barricaded individual. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated, "We had been trying to communicate and encourage a peaceful surrender for everybody, that nobody needed to get hurt and we were unsuccessful at getting the message through to (the suspect)." The suspect eventually opened his front door and began firing his weapon, prompting a sniper from the SWAT team to decisively shoot and stop the threat, as mentioned by Audacy.
Immediately after the shooting, the suspect was given medical aid on-site before being transported to a hospital; his current condition remains unknown. The Macomb County Special Investigation Unit has taken charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as the scene continues to be processed and the public has been advised to avoid the area.
