Monroe County law enforcement swiftly made an arrest yesterday following a threat involving potential gun violence at Whiteford Agricultural School. According to FOX 2 Detroit, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough confirmed the apprehension of a 15-year-old girl from Temperance who is alleged to have threatened to bring a gun to the high school.
A group text message chat session involving students was the medium through which the threat was disseminated, and a parent of one of the students in the chat alerted school officials. School leaders, acting on a tip received around noon, contacted the sheriff's office with their concerns, as detailed by 13abc.
The ensuing investigation led to the seizure of a small-caliber bolt-action rifle from the suspect's home, and the teenager was taken to the Monroe County Youth Center. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is coordinating with the Prosecutor’s Office and Whiteford Agricultural Schools to ascertain subsequent actions in response to the incident, which remains under probe.
As a precaution, law enforcement authorities are set to increase their presence at the Whiteford Agricultural School buildings throughout the school day on Monday, aiming to ensure student safety. The added security, as reported by WTOL, comes while the school and the community process the gravity of the situation and seek to reassure concerned parents and students in the wake of the threatening messages that were planning gun violence against the school for tomorrow.
