A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper remains in critical but stable condition after being struck by a suspected drunk driver early this morning. The incident, which occurred on Highway 249 near Upland Willow Avenue, prompted the closure of the highway in both directions.

According to FOX 26 Houston, the trooper had been outside his vehicle conducting a traffic stop when the collision took place. The impact happened as the driver suspected of being under the influence crashed into the stationary patrol vehicle, eventually hitting the trooper. Attempting to flee the scene, the driver was swiftly apprehended by authorities.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told FOX 26 Houston that the roadway was fully closed as an investigation was underway. Commuters were advised to detour using the North Freeway to Beltway 8 as an investigation was conducted, disrupting the flow of traffic into the early morning hours.

DPS Lt. Craig Cummings conveyed a sense of cautious optimism following the incident. "Hopeful for a very positive outcome," Cummings stated in a press conference outside of the hospital where the trooper was being treated, as reported by KHOU. The lieutenant refrained from releasing the injured trooper's identity, however, he urged the public to "Keep the trooper and the doctor and medical staff in your thoughts."
