The Texas Public Safety Commission (PSC) is now officially on the hunt for a new Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The announcement came Monday, when the PSC detailed the formation of a selection committee to guide the recruitment process, following a session at DPS Headquarters in Austin.
In the quest to find a suitable successor, PSC Chairman Steven P. Mach stressed the importance of this endeavor, noting, "Selecting the right leader for an agency like the Texas Department of Public Safety is no small task", according to a statement released by the DPS website. The commission has indeed underscored the gravity of the role, with plans to meticulously sift through candidates, and accept expressions of interest until Oct. 4, 2024.
Chairman Mach and Commissioner Nelda L. Blair will helm the two-person selection committee, which will review applications, vet potential candidates, and ultimately present the finalists for the full commission's consideration. Their mission is to find someone suitably equipped to navigate the evolving challenges of public safety and the diverse needs of Texans, aiming to finalize their choice by year's end.
With the current DPS Director Steven C. McCraw slated to retire after a 15-year tenure, announced last month, the department is seeking fresh leadership to steer the organization into its next chapter. McCraw remains in his position until his successor is appointed, ensuring a seamless transition at the top echelons of the department, as mentioned in the DPS announcement.
Further details regarding the selection process and requirements for the role can be accessed through the PSC website. The PSC has requested that candidates and other interested parties refrain from directly contacting its members about the ongoing process.
