
A serious collision that occurred on Interstate 485 Outer in northwest Charlotte yesterday afternoon has left three individuals with significant injuries. The incident, which took place near mile marker 32 and US-29/North Tryon Street, involved several lanes and resulted in an extensive closure of the highway, as reported by WBTV.
Emergency services, including the Charlotte Fire Department, attended the scene, and the lanes were expected to necessarily be closed for multiple hours due to the severity of the accident. According to details revealed by Medic, two of the injured parties sustained life-threatening injuries, while the third was seriously hurt. As per a statement obtained by QC News, all victims were transported to the hospital.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation indicated that the accident occurred around 1:45 p.m., and by early evening, all lanes were reopened to traffic. The cause of the crash remains unclear as the investigation continues. The event caused significant traffic disruptions, with backups extending past the University City Boulevard exit, WCCB Charlotte noted.
Initial reports from the scene did not immediately disclose how many vehicles were involved, but the aftermath required a concerted response from local authorities to manage and eventually to clear the scene. The accident, which had a high impact on traffic conditions, compelled drivers to seek alternative routes throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. I-485 eventually reopened at around 6:45 p.m., as projected by the NCDOT.
