In a gritty display of collegiate football, the Towson Tigers clawed their way to a 14-9 victory against the Morgan State Bears this Saturday as tensions and excitement hung thick in the air of Johnny Unitas Stadium. The "Battle for Greater Baltimore" saw the Tigers stretch their winning streak to seven games over the Bears, witnessed by a crowd exceeding 8,374 fans, according to an article by the Baltimore Sun. Towson's win was a close shave, with Morgan State proving to be fierce competition despite being tackled by defeat once again.
Setting the stage in the opening act, Morgan State's Carlvainsky Decius intercepted a pass from Towson's quarterback, Carlos Davis. However, the Bears could only muster a 40-yard field goal to capitalize on the turnover. Shortly after, Towson responded with smart plays, including a dive into the end zone from their wide receiver Sam Reynolds, as reported by WMAR-2 News, and the first quarter concluded with the Tigers nudging ahead by a score of 7-3.
The tussle between the two teams saw Towson increase their advantage to 14-3 in the dying seconds of the first half after a six-yard touchdown run by Christopher Watkins. Coming out of halftime, Morgan State swiftly responded with a 74-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tahj Smith to wide receiver Joseph Kennerly, though the Bears were disappointed when the subsequent extra point was blocked. This failed extra point would prove pivotal, leaving the Bears trailing with the final score line that caused spirits to soar for Towson fans as the clock wound down to zero.
Notably, both teams rattled the field with penalties throughout the gritty contest, with Morgan State accumulating nine penalties for 58 yards while Towson was flagged six times for 70 yards. Despite these hiccups, the game was a testament to resilience and strategy, "We just left too much out there on offense,” Towson second-year coach Pete Shinnick told reporters after the game. “I thought we easily could have gotten in the end zone a couple more times, but credit to Morgan. They played really tough", as detailed by the Baltimore Sun.
Their next encounter on the field takes Towson out of town for a game against Villanova, clearly ready to face new challenges and hopefully carry the momentum of their hometown triumph.
