Two fatalities and one injury were the aftermath of a calamitous collision on Detroit's east side, where a car reportedly careened into the Prince Liquor store following an encounter with multiple vehicles. Detroit police responded to the crash site located at the junction of Gratiot and Harper avenues shortly before midnight on Sunday, where they found the chaotic scene as described by The Detroit News.
A survivor, Jasmin Martin, recounted her near escape to FOX 2 Detroit, stating "I was sitting in the car, and it happened so fast… the car came speeding and flew over my car, hit my car, and all I saw was bodies over my car." Another bystander, identified only as Ray, witnessed the vehicle going airborne and tearing in two, and he lamented the horror of people inside the car as it hurtled into the store, the crash not just an isolated incident, but a part of a grim tally that has seen 566 highway fatalities in Michigan thus far in 2024.
The Detroit Police Department confirmed to WWJ Newsradio the fatal incident involved an SUV and another car; one was northbound and the other southbound on Gratiot Ave when the two met in disaster, resulting in one vehicle smashed against the liquor store facade. The identities of those who perished were not immediately disclosed, and the third individual injured was reported to be in temporary serious condition at a local hospital.
