An 87-year-old woman perished in a fire that ravaged a rowhome in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, authorities informed. First responders were summoned to the unwanted inferno in the 3500 block of Frankford Avenue just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, where they found a residence thoroughly consumed by flame, as FOX29 reported.
Police stated that the elderly woman, yet to be publicly named, was discovered deceased inside the home. Tragically, despite the attempts to quickly bring her aid, she was pronounced dead at the scene. More than 65 firefighters attended to the emergency, with some fighting the blaze from the rooftop, amidst billows of smoke and the eruption of flames, as detailed by NBC Philadelphia. The inferno's cause is under strict investigation by the fire marshal's office.
Simultaneous reports from another incident in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section indicated that a 74-year-old woman named Barbara Czekaj also lost her life in a house fire on the same block, with the incident occurring around the same time. "It was pitch black up in the air," neighborhood resident Diane Smalls recalled, painting a harrowing image of the scene, according to 6ABC. Jerry Hudgens, a neighbor, employed a sledgehammer in a desperate attempt to to enter the dwelling and rescue the occupant but was thwarted by the overwhelming smoke.
"Tried to get in there and get her. I knocked a couple of windows loose. The smoke was too much," Hudgens told 6ABC. Deborah Redding, a friend, remembered Czekaj as "a wonderful woman" who "would do anything for anybody." Another local, known as Nathaniel from South Philadelphia, lamented Czekaj's tragic demise saying, "She was a nice lady and hate to see her go this way," and added, "That's a tragedy."
