The venerable walls of UCLA have again been crowned with the distinction of being the top public university in America marking the eighth consecutive year that the institution has held this honor according to U.S. News & World Report's 2025 rankings, as reported by KTLA. This ranking is a comprehensive assessment of various factors including graduation rates and peer assessments, showing UCLA's commitment to academic excellence and diversity.
But the story isn't just in the rankings, as UCLA prides itself on being a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds with about a third of students coming from first-generation or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, contributing to UCLA's number one rank in social mobility among top public universities. According to a CBS News report, these students graduate at rates comparable to the overall graduation rate, which exceeds 90%, this achievement allows the institution not just to lead the academic race but also to empower the less privileged in climbing the ladder of education.
Aside from its general ranking, UCLA's commitment extends to supporting military veterans and their families. As Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt puts it in a statement obtained by the UCLA Newsroom, "We want to make UCLA the most impactful university," a sentiment reflected in the university being named the number one public university for military veterans. UCLA supports this demographic with 400 veterans and 600 military spouses enrolled this year, further cementing the university's dedication to inclusivity and support for diverse communities within its campus.
The achievements of UCLA span multiple disciplines as well, with several academic programs including psychology, economics, computer science, engineering, teaching, and nursing ranking in the top ten nationwide for public universities. In a sentiment that echoes the pride of the student body, first-generation student and pre-psychology major Neilani Maximo told the UCLA Newsroom, “I’m definitely bragging about it,” indicating the pride and the sense of belonging many students feel at the institution that continually strives for holistic development, academic rigor, and diversity.
