The University of Texas at Austin has climbed the academic ranks, securing the No. 7 spot among public universities nationwide in the latest U.S. News & World Report undergraduate rankings. Additionally, UT holds its ground as the top public university in the Lone Star State, boasting a leap to No. 30 when pitted against all universities, both public and private. These numbers were made public in a report released on the university's official website.
In a statement that mirrored sentiments from his State of the University address, UT President Jay Hartzell said, "As I remarked in my State of the University address last week, this is an extraordinary time for The University of Texas, in part because of our breadth and depth." He linked the university's rising reputation to its expansive program offerings and the robust demand to join the Longhorn legacy, a sentiment reflected in UT's ranking across numerous undergraduate programs.
The university has also made strides in serving those beyond its traditional student body. It rose to No. 14 on the ranking for being veteran-friendly and has maintained its position as the top institution in Texas for veterans. Innovation and global perspectives are also standout attributes, with UT ranking No. 1 in the state and No. 19 nationally for innovation, alongside a No. 4 rank for its study abroad programs among public universities.
UT's McCombs School of Business and Cockrell School of Engineering notably ranked No. 6 and No. 10, respectively, nationally. The prominence of these schools is marked further by their specialties, with the McCombs School of Business landing the top 10 spots in 12 areas and the engineering school securing the top 10 rankings in eight specialties. The computer science program has matched this standard of excellence by also achieving a No. 10 national ranking, the university reports.
These rankings, highly regarded in higher education circles, are determined through several factors including graduation rates, faculty resources, and student achievement. The U.S. News & World Report has become a staple in assessing the quality and impact of undergraduate programs nationally, a testament to which UT Austin can now lay claim to an impressive 76 undergraduate and graduate programs in the top 10 of their fields.
