The tides have turned in the desert as the UNLV football team has surged into the limelight, breaking into The Associated Press Top 25 poll for the very first time. After trouncing Fresno State with a lopsided score of 59-14, the Rebels have successfully maneuvered their way into the 25th spot, sharing it with Texas A&M, as detailed by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
With this feat, UNLV has not only etched its name on the national scene but also upheld a perfect record of 4-0 for the season – the program's best kickoff since 1976. The new ranking aligns with the Rebels' position at No. 23 in the current USA Today Coaches Poll, painting a picture of a program on the upswing amidst the competitive landscape of college football, as noted by KTNV.
The program faced challenges after starting quarterback Matthew Sluka left due to disagreements over payments related to name, image, and likeness. Despite this setback and past interest in the Pac-12, the Rebels have remained strong and committed to the Mountain West conference.
The Rebels are gearing up to play Syracuse at Allegiant Stadium, with a focus on sixth-year transfer quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams. In his debut, he threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns, plus 119 rushing yards and another touchdown. The game starts at 6 p.m. this Friday, and the Rebels hope to keep their undefeated streak alive.
