
Over two dozen individuals were apprehended in a sting operation tackling retail theft in Ventura County, seizing an estimated $1,400 worth of stolen goods, as well as drugs and paraphernalia, according to a media release from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. The Ventura County Organized Retail Theft Task Force, supported by various local law enforcement branches and the Target Corporation, led the weekend crackdown on August 23 and 24.
It has detailed in the release, that 19 adults and 3 juveniles faced arrest during the "blitz operation," which is designed to deploy concentrated law enforcement resources against targeted retail establishments to curb theft. Ashley Gallagher, Milen Ghazaryan, Emily Crowe, Evan Jones, Karla Martin, Natalie Owens, and a minor were among those cited for petty theft, while three other juveniles were cited for shoplifting. The Task Force worked alongside the Simi Valley Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and several other agencies in a strategic collaboration that spanned across Moorpark and Simi Valley.
Particular suspects faced varying charges: Dontell Smith was taken in for shoplifting along with a misdemeanor warrant issued for battery, vandalism, and business obstruction, having since been released with an upcoming court date on October 25, 2024. Others, including Yhosmira Gomez-Torres, were cited and released due to caretaking responsibilities for a young child present at the time of the operation. Significant bail amounts were set for several individuals; however, all but a few were released on their own recognizance, with several court dates set for early September.
The recently established Ventura County Organized Retail Theft Task Force is subsidized by a California state grant program aimed at staunching the steep annual losses, estimated at around $10 million, caused by organized retail, vehicle, and cargo theft.
