A Victorville man faces charges after engaging in what he believed to be an interaction with a 14-year-old girl in a chatroom, which was, in reality, an undercover sting operation conducted by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. The suspect in question, 24-year-old Claudio Betancourt, utilized the screen name "spicy_burrito15" and expressed his intent to meet the "girl" for sexual acts. His arrest was reported by KTLA and further details were provided by a Nixle alert released by the department.
Betancourt was apprehended on Wednesday, after arranging to connect through a separate platform than the initial anonymous chat site. His communication, and ultimate agreement to meet up with the undercover officer posing as a teenage girl, led to charges of lewd act on a child 14 or 15 years old, contacting a minor to commit a felony, and arranging to meet a minor for lewd purposes. He was booked at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto with a bail set at $250,000, reported KTLA.
Authorities are urging community members to come forward if they have any additional information on this case or if there are potentially other victims. Detective Wendy Winegar of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is the point of contact for those willing to share information that might aid in the investigation. Following the procedure, the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, under Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus, has released Betancourt’s photograph to aid in the identification of possible victims.
As the case moves forward, Betancourt is scheduled for a court appearance at the Victorville Superior Court.
