As National Suicide Awareness Month wraps up, Wake County is focusing on youth mental health with a community event aimed at breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illness. Earlier this week, the Wake County 4-H Teen Council held its annual Walk for Mental Health, bringing residents together at Lake Crabtree County Park, according to the Wake County.

"With suicide being one of the leading causes of death among our youth, it’s vital that we come together as a community to face this crisis head-on,” Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Shinica Thomas expressed, according to Wake County's news release. The event features a walk and aims to inspire conversations about mental health, with educational exhibits on the key challenges facing youth today. It also provides a platform for community support through activities designed to create a supportive environment for those affected by mental health issues.

Attendees can expect a peaceful experience walking through Lake Crabtree County Park, known for its scenic trails and waterfront views. The event will take place at the Dogwood Shelter, with signs directing participants to the paved loop where the walk will begin, welcoming individuals of all ages and abilities.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 15–24, and 1 in 4 teens has been diagnosed with a mental health condition. These statistics show a clear need for community action and advocacy, goals that NAMI Wake County works toward through events like this. By joining the walk, participants help strengthen local mental health resources and create a safe, supportive environment for youth facing mental health challenges.

To help combat mental health stigma and support youth mental health in Wake County, community members are encouraged to register and participate in the upcoming event. Each step raises critical awareness and provides support for those in need. To register for the walk or to find more information about the Wake County 4-H Teen Council's Walk for Mental Health.
