Amherst's Marion L. Steele High School found itself at the center of a harrowing incident yesterday after a threatening message was discovered scrawled on a bathroom stall. The message, which made reference to a gun and included a list of students' names, prompted school officials to institute an immediate lockdown. School officials put the lockdown in place because of a "threatening message" written inside one of the girls bathroom stalls, stated Mike Molnar, the school's Superintendent, in a post on the official Facebook account reported by WKYC.
The situation escalated as police and school resource officers secured the premises, leading to the dismissal of students for the remainder of the day. Classes, however, are set to resume today. In a statement obtained by The Chronicle, Superintendent Molnar confirmed that a suspect had been identified by the police and assured that the individual responsible for the threat "will not be present at school or on school property." according to the Cleveland19. The Chronicle further reported that despite the initial alarm, after an extensive sweep of the school, officers found no evidence that staff or students were in any immediate danger.
The procedure was handled tightly during the lockdown as Amherst police dismissed each class from the building methodically. According to a press release obtained by Cleveland19, students and staff were "cleared and escorted through the main doors of the high school to their buses and cars." Post-incident, all areas within the school were thoroughly searched, encompassing lockers, classrooms, restrooms, and additional spaces, concluding that the environment was safe for the school community's return.
The investigation into the incident, which remains ongoing, has also seen proactive engagement with the families of those directly implicated by the threat. "The parents of students who were named on the list were contacted by the school and will remain in contact with the administration and police," as reported by Cleveland19. To bolster security and provide reassurance, additional police personnel will be present at the high school in the following days. The community of Amherst and the Marion L. Steele High School bears the burden of concern and the weight of vigilance as the safety of our children becomes an ever-pressing matter in the sanctuaries we've made for learning and growth.
