Last Thursday marked the inaugural Hispanic Heritage Awards, organized by the Office of Hispanic/Latino and Multicultural Resources (OHLMR). Held at the Live! Casino and Hotel Maryland, the event honored 23 local Hispanic and Latino residents for their outstanding contributions in leadership, education, public service, the arts, and business. According to the Anne Arundel County news release, County Executive Steuart Pittman and Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller were present to honor these community pillars.
Among the honorees were Reverend Hector Calixto, who received the Leader in Faith Award, and Dr. Elena Del Campillo, who was acknowledged for Administrative Excellence in Public Service. Yet it wasn't only individual achievements in focus. As detailed by the county's press release, Executive Pittman articulated a broader vision: "This event is not just about honoring individual achievements; it’s about recognizing the collective contributions that have shaped our county." He referenced the profound spirit of service and resilience embodied by community members, including the late Miguel Angel Luna, whose tragic passing during the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse was solemnly remembered.
The awards ceremony also carved out space to commemorate Luna's life and legacy through the voice of his widow, Maria Del Carmen Castellon, who highlighted Luna's dedication to his family and community. The event, preceded by Alejandro Negrón, witnessed various cultural showcases, including performances from Larimar Folklore Dominicano and Grupo Venezolano and an exhibition of artworks by the Latin American Art Collective of Anne Arundel.
Alison Flores, Director of the OHLMR, reflected on the event's significance, acknowledging the groundwork laid by the Latino community's leaders. "The awardees laid the groundwork, and we know we stand on the shoulders of giants. We're grateful to highlight the work of phenomenal leaders, and look forward to our continued partnership to make Anne Arundel County The Best Place - For All," she mentioned, as per the county's press release. The collaborative effort to launch this event brought together County agencies, local non-profits, business owners, and community leaders. With its successful inception, the Hispanic Heritage Awards now promises to become a treasured annual tradition celebrating the achievements and cultural richness of Anne Arundel's Hispanic residents.
