Early this morning, robbers commandeered a forklift to uproot and abscond with an ATM from the Fifth Third Bank located on North Main Street in North Canton. The North Canton Police Department, upon arriving at the scene around 4 a.m., discovered the forklift, originally stolen from a nearby Wendy's Restaurant construction site at the 200 block of Applegrove Street NW, left idling in a silent testament behind the bank, according to Cantonrep.
Debris from the ravaged ATM lay strewn about, a stark indication of a hastily executed plan. Authorities had yet to ascertain the intricacies of the crime, including the amount of money that was removed from the ATM. A report by Cleveland19 included an appeal for information from the public, urging anyone with knowledge about the theft of the forklift and the ATM to contact the North Canton Police Department, referencing report #24-014378, with their tips.
The investigation into the audacious heist remains ongoing, with officers piecing together the unusual circumstances surrounding the robbery. "Officers were dispatched to the area and arrived on scene to discover the forklift abandoned behind the bank along with debris from the ATM," said North Canton police in a news release, as quoted by Cantonrep. Fifth Third Bank has elected to withhold comment despite law enforcement's efforts to shed light on the incident.
While the method of theft is certainly unconventional, the incident raises questions about construction site security and the accessibility of heavy machinery for unintended purposes. Further compounding the narrative, the News 5 Cleveland overnight photographer mentioned that "everything was gone besides the decorative sheet metal," suggesting a crime scene stripped of its most indicative components. Meanwhile, 19 News has requested footage that may provide more insights into the robbery, adding another layer to a story still unfolding in the quiet streets of North Canton.
