Officials from the Aurora Police Department provided details on an incident that occurred on October 3, in which a man was fatally shot by police. During a press briefing on Monday, as KDVR reports, authorities identified the location of the event at an apartment complex near the intersection of East 16th Avenue and Oswego Street. The police responded initially to reports of fights at this location, which were said to have begun at Brent's Place, a facility that offers housing to families in need.
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain detailed that upon arrival, two officers encountered a man armed with what seemed to be a tactical rifle. As obtained by Denver7, Chamberlain recounted the officers' efforts, "They stated, 'Please drop the weapon. Drop the weapon.' The suspect's response to this de-escalation and this verbal command was to raise the weapon towards the officers." As described by the chief, this action led one officer to fire two shots, striking the man, who was then attended to by police until medical personnel arrived. Later at the hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries.
Further complicating the tragedy is the nature of the weapon in question, it was revealed as an air rifle resembling an AR-15. Chief Chamberlain articulated uncertainties regarding the classification of the airsoft gun during the press conference, as mentioned by The Denver Post, adding that it appeared "exactly the same as an AR-15 rifle." The authorities have yet to release the body-worn camera footage of the incident, stating the need to review it with the decedent's family, who have requested its unedited release.
Amid these unfolding events, Dillard's family, who was shot, found themselves tangled in bureaucracy, making multiple calls to the Aurora Police Department, they had yet to receive a response by Monday night, according to the family's account in The Denver Post. Described as an intelligent, outgoing, and outspoken individual, Dillard is remembered by his loved ones, including a son and nephew, marking a personal dimension to the story that stretches beyond the immediate facts of the shooting.
