In a move to tighten the grip on impaired driving and bolster road safety initiatives, Austin officials have declared an indefinite enforcement of the 'No Refusal' policy, as reported by KXAN. This year-round measure allows law enforcement to seek search warrants for blood samples from drivers suspected of being under the influence, who initially refuse to undergo breathalyzer or blood tests.
The sustained enforcement decision was prompted by concerning statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation, revealing Austin experienced nearly 1,000 alcohol-related crashes in 2023. Despite a reported 4.1% decrease in deadly crashes statewide between 2022 and 2023, the agency acknowledged that there were "no deathless days" on Texas roads last year, as per KVUE. The program held throughout the summer in Austin marks the first instance of a seven-day-a-week application, rather than its previous limited roll-out on holidays and special events.
Austin joins other Texas regions, such as Mission, the Fort Worth area, Dallas, and San Antonio, in adopting a 24/7 stance on the 'No Refusal' initiative. San Antonio was pioneering, having implemented a permanent no-refusal program since 2011, according to KVUE. These efforts reflect an ongoing challenge to curb Forbes' staggering statistic, ranking Texas as the third-worst state for drunk driving in 2023, with over 42% of all traffic deaths caused by drunk drivers.
