The Austin Police Department (APD) has taken a proactive approach to safeguarding the public during the high-profile 2024 Fall Music Festival, according to the City of Austin. A report detailed APD's vigilance, which includes arrests, response to calls for service, and offense reports within the confines of Zilker Park, where the festival is held. In efforts to keep the festivities untainted by criminal undertakings, officers have worked nonstop to mitigate risks, disrupt ongoing criminal acts, and collar the wrongdoers.
Numbers from APD's public release show that during the first weekend alone, there were two arrests–one for evading on foot and another stemming from a warrant request. Furthermore, APD responded to a total of 225 calls for service and filed 70 offense reports, underscoring their determination to maintain order. Violations including 44 theft from-person cases, predominantly cell phone thefts, mar the festival's otherwise festive atmosphere.
Despite these incidents, however, APD's continuous updates to their crime database indicate that their presence has been a beacon of prevention during the event. Notably, they encourage festival attendees to remain vigilant and heed safety suggestions to minimize theft and other criminal activities. These guidelines include keeping phones out of easy reach, using locked or zipped bags, remaining aware of one's surroundings in crowds, and staying mindful of personal property security, as reported by the City of Austin.
In a press release, APD highlighted the importance of proactive measures, "Don’t put your cell phone in your back pocket or sticking out of a backpack where it can be easily grabbed." They encourage festival-goers to approach any available officer for help and to report non-active thefts via APD's online reporting site or through Austin's 3-1-1 non-emergency number. Additionally, they urge anyone with information on crime to contact the Crime Stoppers tip line, offering anonymity and the possibility of a reward for valuable tips.
