Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) is shifting gears to offer an on-demand collection service for bulk, brush, and household hazardous waste (HHW) to its residential customers. As reported by the City of Austin, the new system, set to begin in January 2025, allows customers to schedule pickups at their convenience, moving away from the previous biannual schedule.
Starting next year, ARR customers can make up to three appointments per calendar year through the Austin Recycles app or by calling a dedicated hotline. Notified by mail and app alerts, customers can initiate collections that will be confirming via email. "We're excited about offering on-demand collection of bulk, brush and household hazardous waste to all of our residential customers," ARR Director Richard McHale said, anticipating that more material will be kept out of landfills as a result. Yet to be announced is how customers' overflow of bulk or hazardous waste will be managed should they exceed their three-collection limit within the year.
The on-demand service not only offers more flexibility but is also positioned to enhance community safety. With Austin's wildfire risks and the potential for waterway blockages, timely brush collection can mitigate associated hazards. Furthermore, the service allows ARR to deploy the appropriate vehicles for specific bulk item pickups, promoting responsible recycling and disposal practices.
The introduction of HHW collection as a new, at-home option represents a significant milestone for ARR. "The health and safety of our team and the community is our top priority," McHale affirmed, noting that the service is a substantial measure for crew safety. Until the program's commencement, residents are prompted to continue using the Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center for hazardous materials. Meanwhile, unpredictable already, ARR crews are bracing for the impact of handling dangerous materials through the new program.
As part of the service rollout, ARR is urging customers to download the Austin Recycles app to receive notifications and service reminders. The department will communicate updates through both the app and mailed notifications about the new on-demand services.
