
The Austin community is reeling from the latest incident of senseless violence, a fatal shooting that took the life of a teenage girl at the Bridge at Harris Ridge Apartments. The Austin Police Department responded to the scene on Monday, October 21, at 6:01 p.m., after receiving multiple calls about the incident. According to a press release from the City of Austin, the officers discovered Za’Riyah Sheffield, a Black female born on February 20, 2008, with gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at 6:09 p.m.
Details provided by the Austin Police Department elucidate the tragedy, showing how a verbal altercation erupted into fatal violence, when a 16-year-old male accused Sheffield of simply looking at him this dispute tragically ended with the suspect shooting the victim and fleeing initially, but the suspect made the decision to return to the scene, leading to his arrest. He is now facing a charge of first-degree murder. In the aftermath of the shooting, Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists were dispatched to the scene to collect evidence and gather statements from witnesses.
The Austin Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward.
