A sea of pink is set to flood Barton Creek Square this Sunday, bringing together a community united by a common thread: the impact of breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen organization is hosting its annual "More than Pink Walk" in Austin, beginning at 7:30 a.m., with an opening ceremony slated for 9 a.m. Registration for the event is free and currently open to the public, according to KXAN.
"The breast cancer community needs more than us to raise that awareness and wear pink. We need to go out and raise funds to support the work that we do to end breast cancer and support our community," said Monique Stensrud, executive director for Susan G. Komen of Central Texas, in a statement obtained by KXAN. Echoing the severity of the issue, an estimated 23,290 women in Texas will face this diagnosis and 3,280 will unfortunately lose their battle with the disease in 2024 alone. These figures underscore the vital nature of the Walk's mission to raise funds for further research and patient support.
According to a release from Morningstar, in 2024, the Komen Financial Assistance program was able to provide over $1.25 million in aid to 2,267 Texans undergoing treatment for breast cancer or living with metastatic breast cancer, Komen's Patient Care Center also offered upwards of 7,796 services to state residents, confronting 8,453 care barriers that might otherwise impede an individual's access to necessary health care or support.
"We are thrilled to welcome the community to the Austin MORE THAN PINK Walk this year, where together we can make a profound impact in the fight against breast cancer," Monique Stensrud told Morningstar. The fight against breast cancer is bolstered by the support of numerous sponsors, including local names like DELL Technologies and national partners such as Bank of America.
