Baltimore and Washington residents can expect a cool-down today as a cold front moves through the area. The National Weather Service reports that this front will head south, allowing high pressure to settle in until midweek.
Early risers may have noticed some last-minute showers along the I-95 corridor, but these will quickly move east before daybreak. Today’s highs will reach the upper 60s to low 70s, while mountain areas will be in the 50s. Expect gusty winds of 25-30 mph throughout the day.
Wind speeds will decrease as evening approaches, but it will remain breezy with light northerly winds. Clear skies tonight will lead to colder temperatures, especially west of the Blue Ridge, where lows could drop into the upper 20s. This may signal the end of the growing season for northern Maryland and parts of Loudoun County, prompting a Freeze Watch for Sunday night into Monday morning.
With high-pressure overhead Sunday night, conditions for radiational cooling will be ideal, posing risks for tender plants still outdoors. Monday will start chilly but warm up to sunny skies and more seasonal temperatures, with southerly winds returning and midweek highs reaching the mid to upper 70s.
As the work week progresses, the high pressure will shift offshore, allowing temperatures to rise gradually. However, keep those jackets handy, as another front could bring showers and lower temperatures back to the low to mid-40s by the end of the week.
For travelers, VFR conditions are expected at airports from today through Wednesday. Sailors should heed the Small Craft Advisory due to gusty northwest winds reaching 25 knots.
