Mayor Brandon M. Scott has released an uplifting recap of Baltimore's 2024 Summer Youth Engagement Strategy, dubbed "BMore Lit: More in '24," which continued the city's commitment to fostering safe and enjoyable experiences for its youth. According to a press release from the City of Baltimore mayor's office, the core goal of the initiative was to offer engaging activities and resources that would cater to young people's interests during the summer break in a secure environment.
Focusing on positive interactions rather than strict law enforcement, the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE) and the Mayor's Office of African American Male Engagement (MOAAME) collaborated with local organizations, including We Our Us and the PEACE Team. This collaboration yielded over 500 positive interactions with young people and resulted in 145 requests for assorted services—from employment aid to school reintegration—as per the information detailed by the Mayor's press release.
Complementing these in-person engagements were various summer events organized by the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks (BCRP), including basketball programs, pool parties, and camps to provide youth with constructive recreational avenues. The city also saw the always anticipated YouthWorks program offer not just a handful but 10,212 job placements to teens and young adults willing to engage in productive work across different sectors.
As a testament to the strategy's success, the mayor's office reported a significant decrease in youth-related crime, with offenses against young people plunging by 25.7 percent and a staggering 48.6 percent drop in youth homicides and non-fatal shootings when compared to the previous summer. These figures were highlighted to demonstrate the initiative's impact on curbing the violence affecting the city’s youth. A multitude of events, over 800 in fact, were witnessed at the city's community block parties, "Rock the Block," where families could gather and connect with their community in a festivity symbolic of the summer's spirit.
