Authorities have announced the arrest of Bernice Betty Byrd, 32, and Gerald Byrd, 34, in connection to the death of their 5-year-old daughter, Zona Byrd. According to a Baltimore Police post, the investigation took place after the child was found deceased yesterday in the 2200 block of Aiken Street. The parents are being charged with first and second-degree child abuse and neglect of a child, resulting in death, and homicide detectives continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the case.

WMAR-2 News reported troubling details from the charging documents about the severe neglect and malnutrition Zona Byrd endured before her tragic death. The report described the young girl's body as "severely emaciated," with her ribs visible, showing extreme malnourishment. The documents noted, "The victim's body was remarkable for its severely emaciated state." It also revealed that both Zona and her brother, who was found in a "gaunt" condition, were sometimes forced to search through trash for food.

The parents deflected blame on their son, claiming that Zona had complained of head pain following an altercation with him last Friday. However, police found this claim suspicious, given the brother's weakened state. A particularly egregious discovery was made at their residence, where the kitchen offered no sustenance within reach of the children. At the same time, several non-perishable food items were locked away in the parents' bedroom closet.

Zona Byrd's official cause of death is pending determination by the Medical Examiner's Office, and both Bernice and Gerald Sr. face charges of first and second-degree child abuse, including neglect resulting in death.
