In a concerning pattern of carelessness, two homes in Arapahoe County were damaged over the weekend in separate incidents linked to fire sources prohibited under current local restrictions. The South Metro Fire District cited such noncompliance as the cause. A family's reliance on a charcoal grill ended with their Aurora home being scorched on Saturday evening. Per a statement by the Aurora Fire Department, as obtained by Denver7, the grill set fire to an adjacent fence, which spread the flames to the family dwelling near S. Moline Street and S. Newark Circle. The residents, including two children, evacuated safely, and the American Red Cross is reportedly assisting the family.
Meanwhile, in Centennial, an unattended fire pit is to blame for igniting two more house fires, causing considerable damage even as firefighters managed to stave off further destruction. According to KDVR, no injuries were reported, but the lack of surveillance of these fire pits underlines a risky trend endangering lives and property.
A further report by the SMFR Fire Marshal’s Office, highlighted by 9News, related how an unattended fire pit placed near combustible materials was identified as the cause of a recent blaze. On Sunday, a deck fire at a residence on S. Kirk Street in Centennial was traced back to a fire pit that had not been completely extinguished. These episodes have occurred despite Arapahoe County being under Stage 1 fire restrictions, which are intended to mitigate such hazards.
