Bay Area residents should prepare for a prolonged period of critical fire weather, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento. Gusty northerly winds and very low humidity levels have prompted alerts. A Wind Advisory is in effect until 11 PM tonight, and a Red Flag Warning will last until 5 PM Saturday.
National Weather Service Sacramento reported that the Valley experienced wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph yesterday, with today’s winds possibly reaching up to 55 mph, especially in the Delta. These strong winds are worsening the dry climate, with relative humidity expected to drop to single digits and mid-teens. National Weather Service warns that this combination of dryness and high winds creates conditions for fast-spreading wildfires.
Citizens are urged to exercise heightened alertness, particularly in the most vulnerable regions, which include "Carquinez Strait and Delta-Central Sacramento Valley in Glenn, Colusa, Yuba, Northern Sutter, and Butte County Below 1000 Ft". The Red Flag Warning delineates an invisible boundary of risk that encircles and defines our daily routine. Moreover, the aviation sector has not been spared from this restless wind, as VFR conditions imply that widespread north-easterly surface winds of 15-25 knots, and gusting 30-45 knots could lead to areas of low-level wind shear until 18z Friday, according to the National Weather Service advisory.
National Weather Service Sacramento forecasts weak ridging on Sunday, leading to lighter winds and drier, more stable conditions. Slightly warmer temperatures are expected, returning to typical fall levels. However, the extended forecast is uncertain, with a potential low-pressure system mid to late next week, causing conflicting models and uncertainty about clear skies.
